FAQs
What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy frequently works with a client’s unconscious processes and the possibility that the client may have unconscious and/or unexpressed developmental experiences which can be the basis for fixated relational patterns.
What is Transactional Analysis?
Transactional Analysis (TA) is an integrative approach, drawing on a variety of psychological theories and is grounded in the therapeutic relationship.
What is Sexual Violence Trauma?
Sexual assault is usually defined as sexual activity between two or more people in which one of the people is coerced or threatened with harm. Should you be uncertain if you have experienced sexual assault or not and should you wish to discuss this, then the support lines or services listed elsewhere on the website, can be used to work this out with support.
How do you find the right therapist?
Everyone is different and you are more than welcome to meet with any therapist of your choosing if they have space to see you AND change your mind if you feel that they are not the right 'fit' for you. You have no obligation to remain with a therapist or counsellor whom you do not feel at ease with or are making the therapeutic gains that you would expect. The research shows that it is more often the relationship you have with the therapist or counsellor as oppose to the particular model or approach they use, which is going to be more therapeutically effective in the long run.
How many therapy sessions are needed?
Long term intervention is often required for healing from significant trauma and everyone is different as to what 'long term' means for them. How long is a piece of string...? This will be reviewed and discussed with you every step of the way.
How long will I need to participate in therapy before I feel better
This is likely to be different for everyone who seeks therapy. You will be asked if you are finding sessions valuable - you do not have to stick with someone should they again not be assisting you to therapeutically achieve the gains that you are after.
What can I expect to happen in a therapy session?
You are in the 'drivers seat' so to speak - this is about you and these sessions are for you. Rest assured you will not be asked to dive into the deep end from the very first session - the emphasis initially is about building the safety of the therapeutic space and relationship. You will be involved in the process from the very first session to the very last.
What if I can’t make it one week or over the school holidays?
Not a problem - often school holidays pose an issue for a lot of people including myself! We can discuss this when it arises and missing a week or two is generally not seen as problematic.
What is the best way to communicate with my therapist?
Once therapy has started, definitely by text message if you are going to be late or not able to make a particular scheduled appointment. Email is also an option especially if you have longer messages or attachments/files to send.
Are you able to prescribe medication or have medication on site?
No. Psychiatrists and GP's are the only clinicians able to prescribe medication.
What about confidentiality?
All records/notes/information recorded are treated with great respect to confidentiality. Case notes are kept in a locked filing cabinet and electronic records and/or reports are located on a laptop accessed only by myself. If your case notes are requested by law, for example by a court order, then I am legally obligated to hand these over. This is only in very rare instances. Confidentiality concerns can be further discussed in person - don't hesitate to ask.
